From ZZZs to A’s, Here’s How Sleep is the Answer to All Exams

Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Depriving yourself of the rest it needs is failing to take into account what the body needs, and the failure to plan will certainly lead to a decline in academic performance. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, teenagers require 8-10 hours of sleep, to maintain a balance as we replenish the energy used during the day. A study in 2019 shows a positive correlation between sleep quantity and quality, with exam scores- indicated that greater the inconsistency of sleep, lower the overall score

Hormones alter teenagers’ body clocks, thus impacting their sleep schedule. Sleep deprivation can cause a wide range of physical, mental and emotional problems which impact academic success.

Known problems of lack of sleep include decreased concentration, impaired memory, and affected sequential thinking. Therefore, this affects a student’s physical ability to be actively involved in the classroom or recall what was learnt after school, resulting in difficulty in retaining and applying information. This doesn’t just affect test scores but also the ability to think in a logical manner and hone lateral cognitive skills.

Hormones alter teenagers’ body clocks, thus impacting their sleep schedule. Sleep debt may further aggravate the inability to regulate emotions by activating the body’s stress response system. Altered levels of cortisol, the stress hormone in teenagers with consistently inadequate sleep can demotivate a student from focusing on school, resulting in the inability to manage schoolwork as well as mental burden. This just fuels aggression, irritability, withdrawing from loved ones, which may not be a direct impact on academics but worsens other factors of one’s life which could limit concentration and motivation to do well and participate in school.

Sleep is a multifaceted need, it is required by humans to function in every aspect of our lives. As teenagers, we must make it our priority to be well rested to ensure we can perform to the best of our capabilities. Quality and quantity of sleep has a tremendous impact on our performance in school, thus to maintain academic performance, students must get a good amount of sleep.
